Slashdot recently announced the winner of their Slashdot CSS Redesign Contest. The winning design, by Alex Bendiken can now be seen at on the main site. At first I was not pleased with the design they chose, though it was the most like the original, which I favor over the over the new layouts proposed by the contestants. If I had to choose one, I would have gone with the design by the runner up, Peter Lada, previewed here.

Even though the new design is familiar, something about it nagged at me. I finally figured what it was about the story blocks and menu bars that bothered me. All the menus have rounded corners, and the story blocks seem to be interupted by the grey grey footers rather than as an intentioned part of the design.

Here’s what it looks like without some of the cruft:

To me at least it seems to offer a cleaner page, that is easier to read. Anything that nags at the eye just detracts from the content of the page.
